COSTABERCI
FOLK TALE

Costaberci’s name is compounded by two sienese words: “costa”, which means hill, and “Berci”, which means scream.

This remarkable name comes from the historical battle of Montaperti, which occurred in 1260, where there have been a struggle between the Ghibellines, lead by Siena, and the Guelph, lead by Florence. During the battle, a group of local farmers screamed to the the inhabitants of Montaperti announcing the arrive of the Guelph’s soldiers. Due to this historical event comes the name Costaberci: the scream’s hill.

The small farm Costaberci, built in 1902, arise nearby the Napoleonic column at the crossroads between the streets that link Siena, Asciano and Montaperti. Those streets carry to the Crete Senesi, Chianti and the city of the Palio, Siena, which is 5 km far away.

Costaberci’s farm is lost in the nature, and it is entirely sorrounded by a fruitful countryside. The Southern part, which is the one that lead to the Crete Senesi, is full of cornfields and sunflower patches; the north-east is known as the green one, because of the vineyards and the olive trees; in the north-east, instead, if the weather is kind, is possible to take a look on the marvellous and historical Torre del Mangia.

Castelnuovo Berardenga

distance 14 km

The city was built in 1355 as a “New Castle” by Siena, because of its cardinal location. Nowdays only the tower in Piazza Petrilli remain from the original fortification, but also that changed its nature since 1755, when it was trasformed in a clockwork tower. Another attraction is Villa Chigi Saracini, built during the XIX century, sorrunded by a garden with an italian style and a park with an English one. This Villa was financed by the Count Guido Saracini, patron of the music and founder of Siena’s Accademia Musicale Chigiana. Above all what makes Castelnuovo Berardenga a tourist destination so charming are its sorroundings, full of villages, churches and villas. Between them must be surely mentioned San Gusmè, the Certosa di Pontignano, the Castello di Montalto and Villa Arceno.

Montalcino

In the southern part of Siena it is possible to find an enchanted mediavale village, similar to one of a fairy tale, sorroundend by a mighty wall and overawed by an ancient castle, which was built with an extreme virtuosity. Montalcino is a marvellous historical city immersed in the landscape of Val d’Orcia’s Natural park, location famous all over the world for the production of Brunello di Montalcino. The village is nearly the same of the XVI century. We suggest our guest to reach the top of the town, where you can have a breath-taking sight.
